The MTM System
MTM Certification by One-MTM Network
Certification in MTM Systems – MTM-1, MTM-2 and MTM-UAS is available from APRC’s best-in-class instructor.
C.H. Wong is one of the few instructors today who can claim to have been trained by Alan D. Brown and Dr. Fred Evan, the founder of UK MTM Association in MTM-1, MTM-2, MTM-3, MTM-X, MTM Core Data, and MOMET. He was also trained at General Electric Corporate Consulting Service in the MTS System to drive the MTS Corporate Culture in GE while working in manufacturing engineering for several years. Over the years, APRC has trained thousands of MTM Practitioners all over Asia. In any multinational in Asia, you will find supervisors, engineers, and managers who had been personally trained by APRC.
Some of our clients include Motorola, Nokia, Emerson, Bosch, Squire, Tristate, SIIX, Siemens, Lemtronics, and hundreds of companies all over Asia.
Today, MTM certification is offered through One-MTM, the worldwide MTM network that provides the standard of training, examination and certification for all who seek MTM training through its members and certified instructors.
MTM Training Available
One-MTM Network, headquartered in Germany, has in recent years taken over the function of IMD (International MTM Directorate) and is coordinating the certified training of MTM. Training in MTM is now offered through UK MTM Association, a member of One-MTM. APRC is affiliated with the UK MTM Association and is authorized to jointly issue MTM certification of the One-MTM Network.
APRC now offers certified training in the MTM System as follows:
a. MTM-1 (7 Days, Prerequisite: None)
b. MTM-1B (4 Days, Prerequisite: None)
c. MTM-2 (5 Days, Prerequisite: a or b above)
d. MTM-UAS (5 Days, Prerequisite: a or b above)
Training in MTM is especially useful in view of the traditionally strong foundation in body motions, hand motions, and ergonomics to design products, tools, fixtures, and workplace layout. Therefore, MTM builds a strong foundation upon which all other systems evolve today, including higher level datablock systems such as:
MTM-UAS
MTM-Logistics
MOST System
MSD Master Sewing Data
GSD General Sewing Data
Why MTM-1 and MTM-2 Are Necessary
Without question, MTM-1 (7 Days) and MTM-2 (5 Days) are the foundations for the study of human motions at work and represent the most significant contribution in the field of work measurement. For those who have not been trained in any MTM system, it is highly recommended to pursue a study in the following before proceeding to any higher level MTM system.
1. MTM-1 (7 Days) or MTM-1B (4 Days)
2. MTM-2 (5 Days)

• MSD (Sewing Data for Garment, Footwear, and Bags manufacturing etc.)
• Direct Time Study
• Work Sampling
MTM-1 Training (7 Days)
This training covers the most fundamental technical knowhow of MTM. With MTM-1 knowhow, candidates will be able to specify the design requirements for the ergonomic application to human operated devices. This includes the geometrical shape of components, parts, tools, machine operated devices, jigs and fixtures, clamps, plugs and sockets which must be designed to accommodate to ease of handling. Participants will be able to relate design shape, geometry and conditions of placement to make the necessary improvement and thereby reduce the time for pick-up and placement.
MTM-1 Body of Knowledge
MTM-1 Training provides the most in-depth coverage of the body of knowledge on motion and time study relating to ergonomics of workplace, component, container, tool and fixture design. It is the only work measurement system that provides detailed instruction on every motion element of human activity at work, comprising:
• Reach • Grasp • Move • Position • Release • Disengage • Turn • Apply Pressure • Crank • Eye Action |
• Foot Motion / Leg Motion / Side Step • Bend • Stoop • Knee • Arise • Sit • Stand • Walk • Turn Body |
Uses of MTM-1
Training in MTM-1 will enable all design improvement to be measurable so that engineers can quantify the improvement made and calculate the savings and changes in man-hours ad process capacity. In this way, every potential design constraint of parts, tools, and placement device can be eliminated to achieve ease of assembly for manufacturing.
MTM-1 is a process work measurement technique. MTM-1 provides the engineers and supervisors with design and measurement tools to bring about changes through improvement to equipment design, product design, tooling design, workplace design and the method of work. It is a powerful methods engineering and methods correction tool that a process engineer can use to evaluate process methods and introduce improvements.
Without MTM-1 know-how, a process engineers or supervisors cannot perform their function adequately. They can only guess or estimate the changes to be made and lack the power of proper analysis for robust change. This certified training is world-wide accreditation taught by the best-in-class MTM Instructor of UK MTMA 2000 Ltd. Your manufacturing personnel so trained will be able to multiply their contribution for Continuous Improvements for year to come in Product Design, Workplace Ergonomics, Planning and Production.
MTM-1B Training (4 Days)
MTM-1B training provides the same technical knowhow as MTM-1, minus the practical analysis of MTM-1 to develop work standards. The emphasis of the training is the same except that the time spent on MTM-1 analysis of operational assembly method is reduced. However, engineers, managers and manufacturing executives will have the same knowledge level of MTM-1 to:
a. Ergonomic Design
b. Tool Design
c. Jig and Fixture Design
d. Part / Component Design
e. Placement Method
f. Container Design
MTM-1B Body of Knowledge
Same as that for MTM-1.
Uses of MTM-1B
Those equipped with MTM-1B knowledge will be able to successfully implement 5S Workplace Improvement far better than those without MTM-1B knowhow.
Although the training is abridged, the participants will still be able to apply the knowledge to assembly operation analysis.
Certification in MTM-1B shows that the participants have undergone a proper training and possess the technical knowhow for making improvement as indicated above.
Specifically, the participants of Certified MTM-1B will gain the knowhow to:
- Develop an organized holding system for all tools according to frequency of use.
- Design tools with different geometry for ease of pick-up and storage
- Design workplace layout to comply with 5S standards for bins, containers, trays, tools, visual controls, assembly methods, trolleys, placement of tools, fixtures, testing monitors and other equipment and appliances.
- Identify operational wastes in the workplace layout, parts placement, storage of light and heavy items, and use of tooling.
MTM-2 Training (5 Days)
MTM-2 training is the 2nd level system of combined motion coding based on statistical and technical simplification of the MTM-1 system. This is done with the main objective of simplifying MTM-1 analysis as well as to reduce the application time of the MTM-1 system. This, however, does not sacrifice the applications to evaluate design for assembly and manufacturability as well as accuracy of the MTM system.
MTM-2 was developed by the then Swedish MTM Association on the instruction of the IMD to simplify the MTM-1 system to improve:
1) Speed of application
2) Reliability of the combined motions
3) Description of methods
4) Consistency of results
5) Ease of application
MTM-2 technique measures the operational methods in the way the human work activities are performed by examining:
a) Type of motions
b) Grasping characteristics
c) Placement of parts
d) Geometrical shape
e) Degree of alignment during insertion
f) Regrasping of parts
g) Weight factor
h) Force or resistance overcome
i) Distance
Main Uses of MTM-2
MTM-2 is used in the following areas:
- Developing accurate work standards for all assembly work in manufacturing.
- Develop higher datablock work measurement system.
- Developing improved operational method of workplace layout, tool, fixture and component part design.
- As a method engineering tool to explore different operational methods of different work processes to seek reduction in operating time.
MTM-UAS (5 Days)
MTM-UAS is the 3rd level system that is derived from combined data of:
GETs – Reach, Grasp, and Release
PUTs – Move and Position
and single Level 2 system together with standard data for fastening and tightening with hand tools or power tools. The Standard Data which forms an additional section to the original MTM-UAS is based on the contribution of German MTM Association and the motion code is therefore based on the German coding convention. The German mnemonic code has to be memorized.
The main advantage of the MTM-UAS is the speed of application which is 2 to 3 times faster than MTM-2 with a balance time of about 5 minutes at a confidence of 95% at ±5% accuracy.
However, it is only suitable where precision in method description and a more definitive motion is not needed. It is generally not recommended for manufacturing assembly work where additional elemental motions are required to cater to the additional adjustments that need to be made especially in assembly work. MTM-UAS is only suitable for general assembly work where methods need not be precisely stated.
Its main usage is within the workshop environment, where the part is picked up and placed to machine to be manipulated and to be worked upon subsequently without minute detailed adjustments.
Essentially, MTM-UAS is based on the following determining factors:
• Case of GET
• Weight / Bulkiness
• Accuracy of PLACE
• Distance Class
MTM-UAS Body of Knowledge
MTM-UAS is a combination of high level datablock system for Part Handling and Tool Fastening based on the recent contribution of the German MTM Association as well as some Level 2 motions:
• Get & Place
• Place
• Handle Tool
• Operate Machine
• Motion Cycle
• Body Motion
• Visual Controls
• Tool Handling – Fastener Assembly
• Tool Handling – Fastener Tightening
